Presentation: “The Power of Projective Techniques”
Qualitative research is conducted to determine why people feel the way they do about certain issues and to better understand how those feelings influence their decisions and behavior. Projective exercises were developed for use in qualitative research and have traditionally been thought of as part of a focus group. These exercises can also be incorporated in online chat style focus groups and in-depth one-on-one interviews.Projectives are essentially aids used by the moderator to enable the participant to comfortably express their emotions related to the topic of inquiry. Rather than using their “logical” left brain to answer the question factually, the exercise forces the participant to use their “intuitive” right brain to access the underlying feelings behind their opinion.

About the Speaker
Nancy Hardwick is President of Hardwick Research, which she founded in 1994. Since then, Ms. Hardwick has been successfully assisting organizations with their qualitative and quantitative research needs.
Nancy is an experienced moderator, skilled listener and communicator. She is well versed in conducting traditional focus groups, online focus groups using chat and bulletin board style formats, in-depth interviews, usability testing, and brainstorming sessions. In addition to the general public, she has lead discussions with specialty groups including teens, physicians, and executives. Nancy has also worked with clients across multiple industries such as product manufacturers, healthcare organizations, software/online services, educators, consumer products and service organizations, advertising agencies, not-for-profits and government agencies.
When Nancy moderates, she incorporates a variety of techniques including individual exercises to gather opinions without participants being biased by others’ responses; group exercises which capitalize on group think; and projective techniques that bring out unrestricted subconscious thoughts. Nancy enables the participants of focus groups to share their insights without one individual dominating the discussion.
Ms. Hardwick has been working in the market research industry since 1986. Prior to starting Hardwick Research, Nancy worked as an Account Executive for Market Trends, Inc. She has a BA from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR.
Nancy is currently serving on the Board of Directors for both the Puget Sound Research Forum and the Qualitative Research Consultants Association. She is also a member of the American Marketing Association.
