Presentation: “Dealing with Anger, Disbelief and Apathy in Focus Groups”
EMC Research was engaged by the Puget Sound Partnership to conduct focus groups designed to probe the issue of pollution in Puget Sound. The Partnership was formed in 2007 and charged by Governor Gregoire with restoring and protecting the Sound’s health. A serious obstacle to achieving this mission has been the perception by local residents that pollution is not a problem, and that the waters of Puget Sound are clean and healthy. The presentation will be made by Ian Stewart of EMC Research and Paul Bergman of the Puget Sound Partnership. The two will speak to the broad spectrum of reactions and emotions encountered during the focus groups (participant disbelief, hostility, ambiguity, sadness, apathy, etc.); how these were addressed to capture relevant insights; screening techniques; segmentation; and how the information gathered was used to develop messaging for a regional advertising campaign.
